Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is my NIPIT too big/small?

Measure the circumference around the elbow using a flexible tape measure. If the circumference is 5-9 inches (14-22 cm) NIPIT will fit for sure. You may need to tighten the straps a little, and make sure:

    • The wide blue strap is on the upper arm
    • The top/bottom red edges are not misaligned
    • Watch this video
  • The thumb is still in the mouth?!

This is normal – but don’t worry, it is uncomfortable and they will stop doing it soon. During the first 1-3 days your child may demonstrate they can still “do it.” Follow the included Parent Guide for what to expect and how to manage your child’s changing behavior.

  • How do I know NIPIT is working?

Nighttime while your child is sleeping is the easiest way to verify if Nipit is working or not. If he or she is not sucking while sleeping, then Nipit is working. During the first few days your child may demonstrate that he or she can still reach the tips of the finger to the mouth while straining their neck and arm – do not panic, this is normal. This is normal, and they usually give up on demonstrating this quickly because it is uncomfortable and tiring. Nipit works by removing the comfort associated with the habit and breaking the oral fixation. Give Nipit time to work.

  • Is NIPIT safe?

Absolutely. NIPIT was developed with your child’s sensitivities in mind. Nipit undergoes strenuous safety testing to verify that all the materials are non-toxic and safe for small children. NIPIT’s design and application has been reviewed by pediatric dental, medical and orthopedic specialists; and is top rated by pediatric dentists and speech therapists.

  • What if my child switches hands?

This is normal, in fact about 25% of children switch. Mostly preschool aged children switch, if they switch you will need a second NIPIT.

  • Will it fit an 11 month old? Or a 10 year old?

NIPIT is not intended for children under two. NIPIT is designed for most children age 2-7 years old, but each child is unique. The circumference AROUND THE ELBOW must be between 5″ and 9″ (14-22 cm). MEASURE around the circumference of the elbow using a measuring tape.

  • When should my child wear NIPIT?

Always wear NIPIT at night when sleeping and during nap time. Also use NIPIT whenever your child would normally suck the thumb/finger, such as while watching T.V., before bed, in the car, etc.

  • Can my child still write and eat?

Yes. NIPIT is the only product to stop thumb/finger sucking that was specifically designed to enable full use of the hands. They will need to eat using eating utensils.

  • My child removes the device.

Try the Easylocks™ – see included instructions for how to install.

Talk with your child about the habit. For best results, preempt your child’s attempts by laying out a path to success with the included chart and stickers. Motivation and positive reinforcement are the key. Use the Super Success Chart to track progress. Or create your own motivational program and together a special reward for successful completion of the 21-day program and stopping the habit. IMPORTANT: DO NOT ASK YOUR CHILD IF THEY CAN REMOVE NIPIT, OR ASK THEM TO SHOW YOU. Discourage your child from removing NIPIT at all times.

  • My child won’t wear NIPIT.

Let your child get familiar with Nipit and how it works. Discuss with them the details of its softness and how it is made, but don’t let them play with it (they should not think of it as a toy). Focus on all the things Nipit allows them to do while reminding them why they are wearing Nipit in the first place. Some kids are highly motivated by the superhero look of Nipit and the “power” they gain from wearing it.

Motivation and positive reinforcement are the key. Use the Super Success Chart to track progress. Or create your own motivational program and together decide on a special reward for successful completion of the 21-day program and stopping the habit. For best results, preempt your child’s attempts to remove Nipit by laying out a path to success with the included chart and stickers, or your own motivational program. Consider your child’s willingness to try to stop. A little bit of willingness goes along way!

  • My child still hasn’t stopped, it just doesn’t seem to be working.

    Age 3 or under:

First do a fit check and make sure Nipit is worn correctly.

Children under the age of three usually take longer to overcome the habit, up to three months. Assess the changes you have seen in the habit since day 1 and then take it one week at a time. After each week, make an assessment how the habit has changed (keeping a journal can help). As long as you’re noticing small changes in the habit, you are making progress and will succeed.

IMPORTANT: NIPIT MUST BE WORN CONSISTENTLY EVERY DAY AND EVERY NIGHT FOR RESULTS.

    Age 4 or older:

First do a fit check and make sure Nipit is worn correctly.

Assess the changes you have seen in the habit since day 1 and then take it one week at a time. After each week, make an assessment how the habit has changed (keeping a journal can help). As long as you’re noticing small changes in the habit, you are making progress and will succeed.

Make sure they are positively motivated. Positive motivation is the key to success (statistics show 80% of motivated children stop the habit sooner). Praise your child he/she is wearing NIPIT and not sucking, and never use it as punishment. Use the Super Success Chart and stickers to track each successful day, and make sure you’ve decided on a special reward for successful completion of the 21-day program and stopping the habit. If your child has an incentive to stop, and is motivated each day, you’ll have success sooner than you imaged possible.

IMPORTANT: NIPIT MUST BE WORN CONSISTENTLY EVERY DAY AND EVERY NIGHT FOR RESULTS.

  • How do I know when we are done?

You must be certain that the sucking habit is completely stopped day and night before discontinuing NIPIT. After 21 days, and after your child has completely stopped, continue wearing Nipit every night for one more week. Continue to carefully observe for two months. If the habit returns you must restart the program from the beginning.

  • The habit came back!

If the habit returns you must restart the entire program from the beginning. So be sure the sucking has completely stopped before discontinuing NIPIT.

  • Is NIPIT washable?

Nipit is machine washable or by hand. Wash cold, air dry. Secure the Velcro straps before washing.

  • I want to make a return.
